How Do YOU Define Success?

I don’t believe it should be considered ”normal” to have to come home every day and “take the edge off”. What’s normal, to me, is choosing to create a life that doesn’t feel so hard and sharp, but rather a life that feels softer and gentler. I think it all comes down to the way we define success. And the best part, is that we each get to choose our own definition. And even better? Our definitions can evolve over time.

For example, success to me 17 years ago was having enough money left in my paycheque to get me through to the following one. It meant having enough left over on Friday night for a carton of cigarettes and a case of Corona or a few litres of wine (plus some vodka for when I came home). It meant not saying things that would land me in trouble. It meant not doing things that would land me in jail. Or at least it meant not getting caught for these things.

Success, to me, was feeling like I was getting away with my behaviour.

It meant hiding the truth of my life.

My definition of success today looks much different.

How do YOU define success?

For me, it’s in cultivating meaningful relationships—with myself and others, having worthy goals, doing work that feels like I am making a difference. It means having time to enjoy doing the things I enjoy doing. It means having financial freedom—enough money so that I don’t experience stress around it, and—most importantly—it’s about enjoying optimal health and vitality. Everything else in my life rests on it, which is why I put so much effort into prioritizing it! I know that if I get injured or sick, I won’t be able to work (at least for a time) which will affect my income, my happiness, my goals, and my stress levels, so I prioritize my physical health through the food I eat and the way I move. My mental health is equally important, and I work hard to protect and nurture it through the lifestyle choices I make.

The way I see it is if I am going to be on this planet, experiencing life in all its ugliness and beauty, the ebbs and flows, the ups and downs, then I want to live as vibrantly as I possibly can, and I just want to feel like I had a FANTASTIC time here when the end comes, you know?

This doesn’t mean I never eat junk or skip workouts or make choices that take me farther away from where I want to go. I mess up every single day. But my rituals, my habits, my daily routines, THESE are what keep me inside a life I am not constantly trying to run away from. And even when I don’t do things “right”, I remember that I get forever tries.

Because it’s mine. And I want to make the very, very best of my one wild and precious life.

Imagine a world where we all lived our lives as if they were on purpose.

Because they are.

Because I want you to love your life one bite at a time.
