If your body was a business, how would you say it was performing?
Would you say it was operating strategically, reaching its targets, and performing well?
Or would you you say it was under performing, struggling, making mistakes, on the verge of bankruptcy, and in desperate need of a turnaround strategy?
I want to share a story about how being virtually bankrupt physically, emotionally and mentally was exactly where I was before I turned myself around…and made a huge life change.
I share it with you in the hope of inspiring change, if you are struggling with an addiction.
When I was at College, my favourite class was Business Strategy. I loved learning the various business models and aligning each decision (whether tactical, operational or strategic) with the overall business strategy in order to affect profitability.
It opened my eyes to a whole new world. And a whole new way of thinking.
Today, it is impossible for me to look at a business objectively. I am constantly asking myself whether their mission and vision are aligned with the choices they are making in their operational, financial, marketing or sales processes and whether things are working according to their overall plan.
I notice the flow of operations, the layout, the pricing, the packaging, and the various methods of delivering customer service; I pay attention to the way a customer is moved through each process.
Having an aligned strategy is the key that unlocks success in any area of business or life.
Because "if you don't know where you're going any road will get you there". This quote isn't a direct quote from Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland, but it is the gist of a conversation between Alice and the Cheshire Cat.
And it is a great reminder that when we don't set goals for ourselves and then take steps to get us closer to those goals, we simply drift along allowing life to happen to us. We get out of the driver's seat and allow someone else to take the wheel.
Drifting Versus Deciding
When I was a drinker, I was a drifter.
During the day, I experienced a lot of inner conflict and I felt a lot of angst. I knew I wanted more out of my life, but I just didn't know how to get it. As the day wore on and 5 o'clock drew closer, my attention drifted towards alcohol, and once I started drinking, my anxiety was quelled with each glass of wine that was poured.
My light was dimmed; my inhibitions were lowered (along with my standards), and my true heart desires were shoved down with every sip, gulp, chug.
I drifted along one day to the next, not knowing where I was headed, and not even really getting that all I needed to do was decide to go somewhere; hating myself for my life but not knowing how to change it.
When I finally quit drinking, I was almost emotionally, physically, and mentally bankrupt. I needed to create a plan; a very strategic plan with clear goals and a map to get where I wanted to go. I conducted a complete turnaround and not only did I achieve my goals; I crushed them.
Everything changed when I had clarity. I knew what I wanted and I had a plan to get there.
And it felt awesome to win.
If Your Body Was A Business
We've all seen businesses go under and said to ourselves, "yeah, I'm not surprised, they clearly stopped caring a long time ago!", or "their quality has been declining for a while" or, "they were 'stuck in the middle'. They just didn't know who they were, and so they tried to be everything to everybody."
When a business lacks a clear strategy, things don't feel right. They make poor decisions, and unless something or someone causes it to turn around, it is doomed for failure.
Now, think of a company you respect or that is doing things really well. Let's use a restaurant you love going to as an example.
Think of the way it looks; they way you are greeted; the cleanliness of the space; the efficiency of the service; the other customers who are there; the managers who run it; the quality and presentation of the food; the lighting; the music...think of why you want to spend your money there as opposed to somewhere else.
The feelings you have for this business occur because they know exactly who they are, and they align each and every decision with their strategy. They stay in business for generations, because they have a formula for success that works.
If your body was a business, would people invest in it? Would people talk positively about it? Would it be so successful that people would want to emulate it?
Or would it be "stuck in the middle" not sure of what it stood for, grasping at straws and falling apart? Would people dismiss it and talk about how poorly run and under-productive it was?
If your body was a business, would you be going bankrupt the way I was?
The Challenge
My hope is that I can be the impetus for your turnaround strategy if you are struggling with sugar addiction.
When you buy junk food, how often have you felt bad or guilty or out of control or as if something outside of yourself is reaching for it? How often have you eaten in shame? How often do you regret eating something and swearing that's the last time, only to find yourself doing it the next day...and the next...
I get it. I promise I get it. I did it with alcohol and then I transferred my addiction to sugar when I quit drinking.
Sugar addiction is real, and at a level that lies between the conscious ("I really shouldn't be buying this") and the subconscious (doing it anyway) there is a voice inside us that says: "You don't have to do this. You just need to know a better way."
As a drinker, I would make promises with myself not to drink and then find myself wondering how the hell I got home. I hated my "lack of self-control".
Instead of hating the drug, I hated myself.
If you read last week's blog post, you'll know that I am starting a Kick The Sugar Challenge. If you struggle with sugar addiction, my hope is that this Challenge might be the beginning of a new way of thinking, and being, for you.
That is my goal and the reason why I've spent so much time working on this Challenge for you. I believe I have created a formula for success that will work if we simply follow the plan.
Why I Need To Do The Challenge With You
When I quit drinking, I was lucky to get into health and fitness, but I found I had intense sugar cravings that I gave in to regularly.
Years ago, I went on a sugar cleanse that helped rid me of the cravings. It was quite drastic, and so I have been doing a lot of research on sugar cleanses, candida cleanses, and other detoxes, and I have developed a plan that I believe is going to be a game-changer.
And I am going to be doing the Challenge with you.
I am doing it with you because even though I am in a healthy weight-range and all of my recipes for sweet treats use natural sugar (maple syrup, honey, coconut palm sugar etc), I have gained weight from eating these treats way too often.
I lack the same energy I used to have, my skin is duller and I'm frustrated that I can't seem to say "no" to each extra piece of dark chocolate...
I need a re-set.
The sugar monster has gotten a hold of me again and it is time to kick him out!
I have done it before and I can do it again, but this time, you get to join me.
I want you to know how it feels to win.
If you are struggling, I want you to know how it feels to conquer an addiction.
I want you to know how amazing it feels to set a challenging goal like this and to achieve it.
I want you to know, deep down, that if you decide to, you CAN do this and you WILL do this, and the harder it gets, the tougher you get…and the more rewarding the result when you succeed.
I have made the plan as simple as I can, with as few rules as possible.
But here's the truth.
If you decide that you want to take this Challenge with us, you need to know going in that it will not be easy and there are rules to follow.
You will need to buy food you may not have bought before and eat food you may have never eaten before. And you will need to stop eating foods that may have become habitual for you; foods that have brought you comfort but that have also caused you so much pain.
There is a strategy to this Challenge with an overall goal to kick a sugar habit that has been holding us back, making us sick and bankrupting our physical, mental and emotional health.
