If you know me, you’ll know I am a huge fan of making decisions. As I type that, I realize it could sound… arrogant. I don’t mean it to. I have made many, many, MANY very poor decisions over my lifetime. Way more than I could ever count. But as I’ve worked on myself over the years, I have felt the impact of–and become empowered by–the idea that I CAN DECIDE. I spent so much of my life “asleep” that I never really knew about this “secret” to living a good life; that instead of being dragged around like a balloon and simply reacting to my environment, I could instead actually CREATE the environment in which I choose to live…through the decisions I make.

This meant I had to stop playing the victim. I needed to fully embrace the belief that life doesn’t happen TO me; it happens FOR me, and it’s my job to wake up, pay attention, heed its warnings and learn its lessons or else risk continuing to make mistakes that pull me farther away from where I want to go.

I had to stop BLAMING people for everything that went “wrong” in my life, and instead, take responsibility for everything in it–the whole of it. Because it is MINE. I needed to do a lot of work to overcome my traumas (both little t and Big T), and I still do, which has allowed me to no longer be held hostage by the pain of my past; rather I use it as information, an opportunity for growth, and a chance to offer myself more love and nurturing.

I needed to take inventory of my life and assess what was working and what wasn’t. This is an iterative process and I am consistently working towards “cleaning out” the behaviours and the people and the habits that aren’t leading me where I have decided I want to go in my life.

And I had to get closer to my FEELINGS. Emotions are messy! We don’t always like them or want to feel them, especially the painful, difficult ones, but healing my past traumas, nurturing my inner child (and allowing my inner parent to show up), and seeing my emotions as key pieces of information, have all combined to help me grow up and elevate my life.

I am nowhere near “done”. I know I never will be, as the story of my life continues to play out. The difference is that I can now see around corners; I leverage my emotions as information, my feelings as a way IN, and my life as a movie, where I am not only the star, but also the director. So much of my life is up to ME…and the decisions I make.

The research shows we make about 2,000 decisions a day, and yet many of us tend to make them on autopilot. Our subconscious mind does most of the heavy lifting when it comes to decision-making–up to 99% in fact–so, it’s important to come up for air now and again, take a “bird’s eye view” of our lives, and DECIDE if we like what we see and where we’re headed. If not, we can decide to change course.

I believe our power lies in making decisions with intention. Truly choosing the way we spend our time, the thoughts we choose to think, the people we choose to spend our time with, the ways we allow our spirit to move through this world and the way we choose to BE. We each get to DECIDE what our lives will look like, based on the decisions we make.

So, question your beliefs. Ask yourself why you do the things you do, and if you’re unhappy with the way your life is going, have the awareness that you have everything inside of you to make the necessary changes.

Because we are never, ever stuck.

And because I want you to love your life one bite at a time.
