Over the past several weeks, I have been working on creating a special gift for anyone who chooses to join me on this journey.
In order to make sure it was something that people could truly benefit from, I needed to get really clear on why I started this blog in the first place, and so I went back to where I was 13 years ago when I embarked on this new path.
If you’ve been following along with me, you’ll know that ever since I became sober, I have become increasingly passionate about living a healthy lifestyle.
I embraced healthy eating and daily exercise, and I used them as my recovery plan. I connected to the lifestyle more than I did to traditional plans like AA or Women For Sobriety. I didn’t feel attached to those groups the way I did to people at a yoga class, or to myself, alone in my kitchen, preparing healthy meals that nourished my body and provided me with the vitamins and the energy I needed to feel good, to live well, and to achieve my goals in life.
I also embarked on a spiritual journey. As I began to “wake up” and make sense of the world in general (and my presence on earth in particular), I began to fully connect with the idea that we are all here for a purpose. Although I wasn’t entirely sure what mine was yet, I knew I had to keep taking steps, making decisions, making the next right choice. I knew my life’s purpose existed in each and every moment I was breathing; in each and every moment I was making a choice that was aligned with my goals. I believed that with a clear mind and a drive to be my best, my life’s mission would evolve out of these decisions.
During this time of spiritual awakening, I couldn’t stop thinking about the truth that we are all one. I kept reading and learning and understanding that we are all a part of a greater consciousness, a source energy, the divine…and that we are not alone…even when we may feel that way.
We Are All One
I began to truly understand that as much as we may believe that we are the only ones dealing with something, and that no one understands, there are people who do. There are people who have dealt with the same issue, or something so similar, that they can completely relate to us.
Over the last several weeks, since sharing my story, I know this to be absolutely true. I am overwhelmed by the number of people who have reached out to tell me that they, too, are in recovery; that they, too, are still struggling with their addiction; that they, too, can relate to what I have been through.
I still catch my breath when people reach out to me. I think of the courage it took for them to type those words and hit “send”. Some of them have told me that they haven’t shared this with anyone else, or that very few people know about their secret. I feel humbled and deeply blessed that they have chosen to share their truth with me.
Every single time, I think to myself…”I knew I was not alone”. It fills me with pride and makes me believe that by sharing our stories, a difference is being made in the world. Change is happening. I feel the shift.
I feel this shift even more after I had the privilege of interviewing Derick Fage. Derick shared his deeply personal story, and the response has been nothing short of remarkable. If you haven’t seen it already, I hope you can set aside some time to watch it. Derick reminds us of what it means to never let anyone, or anything, get in the way of achieving our dreams.
Feeding The Body, Feeding The Soul
In creating the gift I am offering you, I wanted to make sure it was something that would truly serve you. The best way I could think to do that was to get really clear on what I do to stay healthy every day, starting with my food choices. Taking small steps to feed my body healthier than I had before was how I got started, and so that is what I wanted to share with you.
If you’ve been with me since the beginning, then you’ll know that preparation and planning are the keys to helping me maintain good energy levels and a healthy weight (and staying sane!) over the last 13 years. I wanted to give you the inside track on how I actually go about doing that.
My gift to you is a One-Week Plan of exactly what I shop for; what I prepare; how I prepare it; when I make it; how I store it; and when I eat it. It addresses how I leverage the resources of time and money, and my hope is that it will provide you with a very clear picture of how I manage a typical week.
