Treat Yo Self!

“Treat Yo Self!”

I see this slogan on everything from ice cream shop A-frames to memes on Facebook where people are gobbling up slabs of chocolate cake or guzzling back entire bottles of wine.

And I GET it. I mean, I used to BE one of those people telling people, “C’mon…just one won’t hurt” or “Don’t be such a party pooper!”

I wasn’t being good to myself and I wanted others to come down to my level—or else I feared being judged or criticized. I wanted to normalize my behaviour in an effort to have it fly under the radar, and I was so addicted that I couldn’t risk having others see my behaviour as anything but fun! And free! And how we celebrate!

These days, I don’t see those acts as “treating myself”. In fact, I see that kind of behaviour as the exact opposite of it; stealing my health, my dignity, my pride and the love I so desperately want to feel for myself.

I believe the way IN is through the way we TREAT these precious bodies (and brains!) of ours. What if we redefined “treats” to mean heading to a yoga class or doing some deep breathing? Walking in nature, making a nourishing meal, spending quality time with friends, reading a good book, taking a course, tending to our garden? “Treating” ourselves is not downing an entire pint of Ben & Jerry’s while sitting on the couch at night. Believe me, this WAS me and it only made me feel WORSE.

I don’t want to feel guilty after eating. I want to feel energized, hopeful, happy and proud. Does that mean I never, ever have the ice cream? NO! But more often than not, I am making my own cleaned-up version, OR I decide to go for the junk with eyes wide open, enjoying every bite, knowing that I will feel drained and likely a little bloated. But NO guilt. NO shame.

What if we ALL redefined what it means to "treat yo self"? What if, instead of numbing out with alcohol or sugar or junk food, we chose to practice greater awareness around our behaviour in order to make choices from a place of self-love, self-respect and self-trust? It's what changed everything for me, and I would love to help you find more joy and freedom in your life, if you struggle with the way you treat yourself.
